One very prominent theme in the Book of James is the concept of Christian conduct. How are we to live? What are the markings of our faith? What are the words and things we say (or don't say)? James 3 is the backdrop for this episode and much of the chapter includes the famous "Taming of the tongue" passage. James believes that the tongue is a small, yet powerful part of our bodies. Powerful enough to do great harm if left unchecked. In order to walk in closeness with Christ we must acknowledge that our words have power. Making the choice to be wise with our words is important. This comes back to "faith in action" which is something James calls us to consider carefully.
